First: safety, before you touch the panel
If you smell gas or burning, or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, leave the building right away. Get everyone outside, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside the house. Do not go back in to shut anything off. Once the property has been cleared by the fire department or the utility, call us and we will inspect the heating or cooling equipment. If you see smoke, scorch marks around the panel, or hear buzzing or crackling from the breaker box, treat it the same way. Leave and call for help. Electrical heat and burnt smells are not something to wait out overnight.
Reset it once, and only once
A breaker can trip for a harmless reason, like a brief surge on a 110 degree afternoon when everything in your area is pulling at once. So reset it one time. Push the handle fully off, then firmly back to on. Turn your thermostat off first so the system does not restart the instant power returns, then set it back to cool or heat after a few minutes. If the breaker trips again, stop. Leave it in the off position and call for air conditioner repair. Repeated resets push current through whatever is failing, and that turns a small repair into a burned compressor or a scorched contactor.
The safe checks you can do yourself
There are a few things worth looking at while you wait. Check the thermostat batteries and confirm the settings did not get bumped to a mode you did not want. Change the air filter if it is grey and matted, because a starved system runs hot and pulls more current. Walk out to the outdoor unit and clear away weeds, leaves, cottonwood fluff, and the fine ag dust that packs into the coil fins. Give it clear space on all sides. Confirm supply vents inside are open and not blocked by furniture. That is the full list of safe checks.
What not to do
Do not open the electrical disconnect or the panel cover on the outdoor unit. Those terminals stay live even with the thermostat off, and capacitors hold a charge after power is cut. Do not add refrigerant, tighten a gas fitting, or bypass a breaker with a larger one. A breaker sized above the equipment rating removes the protection that is currently doing its job. Do not tape or wedge a handle to hold it closed. Do not spray water into a running condenser to cool it down. And do not keep cycling the system to get through one more evening. Each restart is the hardest moment on a struggling compressor.

Can a dirty filter or dirty coil trip the breaker?
Yes. Restricted airflow makes the motor and compressor work harder and draw more current, which can trip the breaker on a hot afternoon. Change the filter and clear debris from the outdoor unit, then call if it trips again.
Is it safe to just install a bigger breaker?
No. The breaker is sized to protect the wiring and the equipment. A larger one lets a fault keep drawing current instead of cutting it, which risks overheated wire and fire. The trip is a symptom, so we find the cause.
Why does it only trip in the afternoon?
Heat. Higher outdoor temperature raises head pressure and amp draw, so a weak capacitor, tired compressor, or aging breaker fails at peak load and holds fine in the morning. Note the time it happens and tell us.
