We repair or replace the leaking component, evacuate, then weigh in the correct charge.
What we check and what we replace
We inspect the outdoor coil, the suction and liquid lines, the Schrader valves, the filter drier, and the indoor coil. Attic and rooftop package units in this region take a beating from heat and dust, so we look hard at line set insulation and at joints that have been vibrating for a decade. Depending on what we find, we braze a joint, replace a valve core, swap the drier, or replace a coil. Can you just add refrigerant instead of finding the leak?
We can, and sometimes will as a stopgap during peak heat, but the charge will leave again through the same hole. We always tell you what we found and recommend the actual repair rather than a repeating recharge.
Why is my line frozen if the problem is low refrigerant?
Low charge drops the coil temperature below freezing, so humidity in the air turns to ice on the coil and the suction line. Shut the system off and let it thaw before we arrive so we can read pressures accurately.
