What the job involves
A whole-home dehumidifier is a sealed unit mounted near your air handler or furnace, ducted into the return so treated air moves through the same vents you already have. We size it to the square footage and the moisture load, cut and seal the duct connections, run a condensate drain to an approved point, wire the controls, and set a humidistat you can actually read. Most installs take part of a day. We test the drain and confirm the unit cycles with and without the AC calling.
What we check before and during install
We measure relative humidity in several rooms, look at the return duct layout, and check whether the existing system has room for the connection. We inspect the condensate path, because a dehumidifier makes water all year and a bad drain shows up as a stain on a ceiling. We look at attic and crawlspace conditions, duct leaks pulling in humid air, and bathroom or kitchen exhaust that vents into the attic instead of outside. Those problems get named before we quote any equipment.
How we decide it is the right call
Not every damp house needs a dehumidifier. Sometimes the air conditioner is oversized and short cycling, so it cools fast and never runs long enough to wring out moisture. Will a whole-home dehumidifier replace my air conditioner?
No. It removes moisture, not heat. You still need the AC for cooling. The two work together, and a house at a comfortable humidity level often feels cooler at the same thermostat setting.
Does it need its own drain?
Yes. The unit pulls water out of the air continuously, so it needs a condensate line running to an approved drain point or a pump. We set that up during installation and test it before we leave.
How much maintenance does one need?
Plan on a filter change on the dehumidifier itself a few times a year and a check of the drain line. We handle both during a normal HVAC service visit if you would rather not deal with it.
