Ice on the Indoor Coil

Your AC is running, the outdoor unit is humming, and barely any air is coming out of the vents. Then you look at the indoor unit and there is a block of ice on the coil, or water dripping where it should not be. Ice on an evaporator coil means something is off with airflow or refrigerant. Here is what that ice is telling you and what to do next.

What the Ice Actually Means

The indoor coil gets cold because refrigerant absorbs heat from the air blowing across it. If not enough warm air moves across that coil, or if there is not enough refrigerant to carry heat away properly, the coil surface drops below freezing. Condensation that should drip into the drain pan freezes instead, and the ice layer grows until it blocks airflow entirely. That is why the symptom snowballs. A little frost becomes a solid block in a few hours. Once iced, the system cannot cool at all, and the melting water often finds its way onto ceilings and floors. Turn the cooling off and let it thaw before anything else.

Cause One: Restricted Airflow, the Cheapest Fix

Most frozen coils we see start with airflow. A filter loaded with dust, pet hair, or the fine ag dust that settles in through the region chokes the air the coil needs. Closed or blocked supply vents do the same thing, as does a return grille buried behind furniture. Crushed or disconnected flex duct in the attic is a common one on package and attic-mounted systems, and it will not be obvious from inside the house. A dirty blower wheel moves far less air than it looks like it should. Airflow problems are the first thing to rule out because they are usually the least expensive to correct.

Cause Two: Low Refrigerant or a Leak

If airflow is fine, refrigerant charge is the next suspect. Refrigerant does not get used up, so low charge means a leak somewhere in the coil, line set, or fittings. Low pressure makes the coil run colder than designed, and it freezes. Signs include ice starting at the entry point of the coil, hissing or bubbling near the lines, and a system that cools poorly for weeks before it finally ices over. Refrigerant work is not a homeowner job and it is not legal to top off a leaking system and walk away. A leak has to be found and repaired, then the charge set correctly.

Cause Three and Four: Blower and Control Faults

A blower motor that is failing, a bad capacitor, or a motor running at the wrong speed will starve the coil of air even with a clean filter. On variable systems, a control board or ECM module fault does the same. We also see thermostats wired or configured so the fan does not run with the compressor, which freezes a coil fast. Then there are metering device problems, a stuck expansion valve or a plugged orifice, which throttle refrigerant flow to one part of the coil. These show as uneven frost patterns. All of them need meter readings and pressure readings to separate, which is where diagnosis earns its keep.

Safe Checks and What We Do Differently

You can safely do this much: switch cooling off and set the fan to ON to help the ice thaw, change the air filter, check the thermostat batteries and settings, confirm supply and return vents are open and unblocked, look for a tripped breaker, and clear leaves and cottonwood off the outdoor unit. Stop there. Do not open refrigerant lines, do not scrape ice off the coil, and do not touch gas or high-voltage components. When we arrive for air conditioning repair we measure static pressure and temperature split, read refrigerant pressures and superheat, check blower amp draw, inspect the coil and drain, and leak search if the charge is short. How long does it take a frozen coil to thaw?

Usually four to eight hours with the fan running and cooling off. A heavy ice block can take longer. Put towels down, because the melt water is more than the drain pan may hold.

Can I just run the AC once the ice melts?

You can try after a filter change, but if the coil freezes again the cause is still there. Repeated freezing stresses the compressor and floods the drain pan, so get it looked at instead.

Does a frozen coil mean I need a whole new air conditioner?

Often no. Filters, blower parts, and small refrigerant leak repairs fix most cases. Replacement only enters the conversation if the coil itself is leaking on an older system and repair costs stack up.
