Age is a factor, not a verdict
A system's age tells us what to expect, not what to do. Air conditioners that have run hard through valley summers for well over a decade have compressors, coils and blower motors that have all aged together, so one failure often means another is close behind. But age alone never condemns a unit. We have fixed a small control fault on an older system and watched it run several more seasons. We have also seen young units wrecked by a bad install or a leaking coil. What matters is the condition of the expensive parts, and we check those before we say a word about replacement.
What broke matters more than when
Faults fall into rough tiers. Capacitors, contactors, thermostats, control boards, condenser fan motors and blower motors are ordinary repairs, and we do them all day across California and Nevada. A refrigerant leak is the middle ground, because the repair depends on where the leak is and whether the coil can be sealed properly. A failed compressor or a leaking evaporator coil on an older system is the point where repair stops making sense, since you are putting a major component into a machine whose other major components are the same age. We tell you which tier you are in.
Parts availability and matched equipment
Some older systems are hard to feed. Discontinued control boards, obsolete coils and refrigerants that are no longer produced all push a repair from simple to slow, and a system sitting dead for weeks waiting on a part is not much of a fix in July. Matching matters too. If a condenser is replaced but the indoor coil and blower stay, the pair can end up mismatched and never perform the way either half was designed to. Attic package units have their own limits, since the cabinet, coil and furnace section are one assembly. We check parts before we quote anything.
How we think about it on the visit
We start with the fault, not the sales pitch. We measure, we find the actual cause, and we look at the rest of the system while we are in there: coil condition, blower, ductwork, drain, electrical connections, and how much ag dust and cottonwood has packed the outdoor coil. Then we lay out your options in plain terms. Repair now and what we expect from the system afterward. Repair now knowing a bigger failure is likely. Or replace, and why. If a repair will get you through the season honestly, we say so and we do the repair.
Honest cases where replacement wins
A failed compressor in an old system is the clearest one. So is a leaking evaporator coil that is no longer made, or a cabinet that has rusted through on a rooftop or attic package unit. Repeat failures count too. If we have been out three times in two summers for three different parts, the system is telling you something. And if the unit was undersized or badly ducted from day one, no repair fixes rooms that never cooled. In those cases we explain what a correct replacement involves so you are not guessing.

Can I just add refrigerant every year instead of replacing?
Refrigerant does not get used up, so if it is low there is a leak. Topping off yearly means paying for refrigerant that ends up outside. We look for the leak first and tell you whether it can be repaired properly.
My AC still cools a little. Is that worth repairing?
Often yes. Weak cooling is frequently a dirty coil, a failing capacitor, a restricted filter or low airflow, all normal repairs. Have us measure before assuming the worst, because partial cooling usually means the compressor is still alive.
Should I replace the furnace at the same time?
Sometimes, especially with attic package units where the heating and cooling sections share one cabinet. With separate equipment it depends on the furnace's condition and whether the indoor coil and blower can match the new outdoor unit. We check both.
