Age matters, but it is not the whole story

A heat pump that has run hard through a decade of valley summers is in a different spot than one still in its first few years, and we weigh that. But age alone does not decide it. We see older units with clean coils, a sound compressor and good refrigerant charge that only need a contactor or a capacitor, and those are easy calls to repair. We also see younger units that were undersized, poorly installed or starved of airflow for years, and they can fail early. What we look at is condition: how the compressor is drawing, whether the coil has been leaking, how the outdoor unit has held up against dust and debris.

The fault type tells you more than the age does

Electrical and control faults are usually worth repairing. Contactors, capacitors, defrost boards, reversing valve solenoids, blower motors, thermostats and low-voltage wiring are all parts we replace routinely, and the unit goes back to normal operation afterward. Refrigerant faults sit on a scale. A leaking service valve or a bad Schrader is a small job. A leak inside the indoor coil or a pinhole in the line set is bigger, and a failed compressor is the point where the math usually changes. Sealed-system work on an aging unit can be worth doing once. Doing it twice on the same heat pump is where homeowners tend to regret it.

Parts availability and whether the halves still match

Two practical things decide plenty of these calls. First, can we get the part. Older heat pumps and discontinued models sometimes need a control board or a specific coil that is no longer produced, and a universal substitute is not always a clean fit. If a part has a long lead time, you are without heating or cooling while you wait. Second, do the indoor and outdoor sections still work together. If a previous replacement left you with a mismatched air handler and outdoor unit, the system may run poorly no matter what we fix. We tell you when we find that, because it changes the decision.

How we work through it on the visit

We start with the symptom you described and confirm it, then check the simple things you may have already looked at: thermostat settings, breaker, filter condition, whether the outdoor unit is packed with dust or cottonwood, whether supply vents are open. From there we take electrical readings, check airflow and evaluate the refrigerant circuit. Then we explain what failed, what it takes to fix, and what else on that unit looks close to the end. You get the honest version, including when a repair buys you a season or two rather than years. The decision stays yours, and we will do either job.

When replacement is the better answer

A few situations tip clearly toward replacement. A failed compressor on a heat pump that already has a leaking coil is one. A unit that has needed sealed-system repairs more than once is another, because the next leak is usually not the last. Rusted-through cabinets, a cracked coil slab, or an outdoor section that has been running with restricted refrigerant flow for years all point the same direction. Attic-mounted systems that have been leaking condensate into the framing sometimes need the whole install redone rather than a part swapped. We would rather say that up front than take payment for a repair we do not believe in.

Keeping the one you have running longer

Most heat pump failures we see across the region trace back to airflow and outdoor coil condition. Change filters on schedule, more often if you are near open fields or dirt roads. Keep two feet clear around the outdoor unit and pull cottonwood fluff, weeds and dust buildup off the coil faces. Make sure furniture and rugs are not blocking supply or return vents. Have the system looked at before the first long stretch of heat, when a weak capacitor or a dirty coil is still cheap to address rather than a mid-July no-cool call. Small attention early keeps the repair-or-replace question further off.

Not automatically. If the failed part is electrical and the compressor and coils are sound, repair is usually reasonable. We give you the condition report before you decide, including what else on the unit looks worn.

Is it worth adding refrigerant if my heat pump is low?

Only with the leak found and addressed. Refrigerant does not get used up, so low charge means it escaped somewhere. Topping off without repair just puts you back where you started next season.

How do I know if a repair will actually last?

Ask what failed and why. A worn contactor or capacitor replaced cleanly holds up fine. Repeated sealed-system repairs on an aging unit are the ones that tend not to last, and we will say so.
