Gas Smell Near the Furnace

You walked past the furnace and caught that rotten egg smell. Maybe it is faint, maybe it hits you the second you open the hallway door. Either way, you want to know if it is serious and what to do in the next two minutes. Here is the order we would give a neighbour: get out first, make calls second, troubleshoot never.

First: Get Everyone Out of the House

If you smell gas near the furnace, leave the building now and take everyone with you, pets included. Do not stop to find the source, shut anything off, or open windows on your way through. Walk out the door, get a good distance from the house, and stay outside. Once you are clear, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line. They come out for this, they come out fast, and they do not charge you for looking. If anyone feels dizzy, nauseous, has a headache, or seems confused, tell the dispatcher that when you call. Those can be signs of carbon monoxide, and that changes how quickly they respond.

What Not to Do While You Wait

Do not flip light switches, either on or off. Do not use the garage door opener, unplug anything, or plug anything in. Do not light a match or a lighter, and do not smoke anywhere near the house. Skip the cell phone until you are well outside and away from the building. Do not try to close the gas valve at the meter unless the utility asks you to over the phone. And do not go back inside for a phone charger, a laptop, or the dog's leash. Nothing in the house is worth the trip. Wait for the utility or the fire department to tell you the house is clear before anyone walks back in.

Why That Smell Happens Near a Furnace

Natural gas is odourless on its own. Utilities add a sulphur compound so leaks are noticeable, which is why homeowners describe it as rotten eggs or sewer. Near a furnace, the common sources are a loose or corroded gas line fitting, a failing gas valve, a cracked or blocked heat exchanger, or a pilot that has gone out on an older unit while gas keeps trickling. Sometimes it is a nearby water heater and not the furnace at all. Every one of those is a gas-side repair. There is no homeowner version of that job, and guessing at it in a closed room is how small leaks become big problems.

After the Utility Clears the House, Call Us

The gas utility's job is to make the house safe. They will find the leak, shut off gas to the unit, and often red tag the furnace so it cannot be run. What they do not do is repair the heating equipment. That part is ours. We handle heating repair and furnace repair across California and Nevada, and we work on red tagged systems regularly. Tell us what the utility said and whether they left a tag on the unit, because that tells us what to bring. We test the gas valve, inspect the heat exchanger, check the flue and combustion, and either repair it properly or tell you straight if the unit is done.

Keeping the Rest of the Season Quiet

Once the repair is made, a couple of habits reduce the odds of a repeat. Put working carbon monoxide alarms on every sleeping level and test them when you change the clocks. Change your filter on schedule so the burner is not fighting restricted airflow. Keep boxes, paint cans, and stored goods out of the furnace closet, since combustion air matters and solvents near a burner are a bad mix. And have the heating side looked at before the first cold snap rather than during it. A yearly check on the burners, flue, and heat exchanger catches the slow corrosion that turns into a gas smell later.

Gas Smell Near the Furnace — straight answers

Can I just turn off the furnace and stay in the house?

No. Leave the building first, then call 911 or the gas utility from outside. Gas can collect in a closet or hallway faster than you would expect, and switching the furnace off means touching electrical controls in that air.

Does the gas company charge to check a leak?

Emergency leak response is normally free from the utility. They locate the leak, shut off gas to the unit, and make the house safe. They do not repair the furnace itself, which is the part we handle afterward.

Is a faint gas smell only when the furnace starts still a problem?

Treat it the same way. A smell at ignition can mean a slow valve leak or a delayed light-off. Leave, call the utility, and once the house is cleared have us inspect the gas train and heat exchanger.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. We ask what changed, when it started, and what the thermostat reads. That tells us whether to bring parts for a cooling fault or a heating fault.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant pressures, and the outdoor unit. You get told what failed and why, in plain words, before anything is replaced.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and verify

We make the repair, then run the system and measure the results at the vents. If a part needs ordering, we say so and give you a realistic window instead of a vague promise.

Why homeowners call us

  • Built for real valley heatWe work in areas where afternoons sit above 110 degrees and systems run for months without a break. That shapes how we size repairs, check capacitors and contactors, and judge whether a compressor is genuinely done.
  • Attic and package unitsPlenty of homes across the region run attic air handlers or rooftop package units instead of a garage furnace and a side-yard condenser. We are used to the access, the duct runs, and the drain issues those setups bring.
  • Dust and debris we expectAg dust, cottonwood fluff and grass clippings pack condenser coils and starve a system of airflow. We clean what we find and show you the difference, rather than adding refrigerant to a unit that just could not breathe.
  • Heating too, not only ACFurnace repair, heat pump faults and no-heat calls get the same attention as summer work. Ignition problems, cracked or failing components and short cycling all get diagnosed before we recommend anything larger.
  • All major brands, gas & electricFrom Carrier and Trane to Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and Bryant, serviced independently.
  • Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
