If You Smell Gas, Sulphur or Exhaust: Do This First
A burning smell paired with rotten eggs, sulphur or a sharp chemical odour is a life-safety issue, not a maintenance question. 1. Get everyone out of the building, pets included. 2. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line. 3. Do not go back in for anything. 4. Leave the doors as you found them and do not flip switches, light anything or unplug cords on your way out. 5. Once the utility has cleared the house, call us and we will inspect the heating system. The same applies if a carbon monoxide alarm sounds. Outside first, phone second, questions later.smell is faint but you feel dizzy, headachy or nauseous, treat it as the real thing.
If It Smells Like Hot Dust, Plastic or Electrical Burning
Hot dust is the common one. The first heating cycle of the season bakes off the summer's dust on the heat exchanger and burners, and the smell should thin out within twenty or thirty minutes and not come back. Burning plastic, hot metal or that sharp electrical smell like a shorted cord is different. Shut the system off at the thermostat, then switch off the breaker for the furnace or air handler at the panel. Do not restart it to test the smell again. Melting insulation on a blower motor, a scorched control board or a loose high-voltage connection all smell like that, and each one gets worse with runtime.
What Not to Do While You Wait
Do not open the furnace or air handler cabinet. Behind that panel is line voltage, a gas valve and a heat exchanger, and none of it is homeowner territory. Do not tape over or cover a vent to stop the smell, because you are only starving the blower. Do not spray air freshener into the return, and do not run the fan on continuous hoping to clear it out if you suspect anything electrical. Safe checks stop at the obvious. Swap a dirty filter for a clean one, confirm the supply vents are open, look for a tripped breaker, and check that the thermostat is set the way you think it is.
What Usually Causes It, Room by Room
In the homes we work on across California and Nevada, a first-of-the-season dust smell is the top answer. After that it is a filter so loaded that airflow drops and the heat exchanger runs hot, which produces a scorched smell every cycle. Blower motors with worn bearings run hot and cook their own windings. On attic package units and older furnaces, rodents nest against warm components and that insulation and debris burns off. Electrical faults show up at contactors, capacitors and control boards. A cracked heat exchanger is less common but the reason we always look, because that one puts combustion gases into your air.

Can a dirty filter cause a burning smell?
Yes. A clogged filter chokes airflow, the heat exchanger runs hotter than designed, and you get a scorched smell every cycle. Put in a clean filter. If the smell stays, something else is running hot.
Is a burning smell from the AC a different problem?
